NPS: fishing is popular along the jetties. Reaching the Gulf-side cut overland from Padre Island National Seashore requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle on the island/beach route; NPS states there is no vehicle crossing to South Padre Island from here. Boat access is from Port Mansfield through the USACE-maintained channel. Confirm current NPS, refuge, and Corps postings. This is not Lower Laguna Madre-wide conditions.
Primary hazards
Remote location, four-wheel-drive beach travel, strong current, barge traffic, and slick granite are the primary hazards. Do not attempt to cross the channel by vehicle. Heat, lightning, and limited cell coverage are routine Lower Coast risks.
